What Do Giraffes Have To Do With Workforce Optimisation?

Written by:

I know… strange question. But stay with me. There was a moment in one of our sessions where I asked:

“What do giraffes have to do with workforce optimisation?”

And I could see people smiling — or looking at me like I’d completely lost my mind.
Because it’s unexpected. But it’s also the perfect example. Giraffes didn’t always have long necks. They adapted. Their environment changed — and instead of struggling, they evolved. And honestly… healthcare feels exactly like that right now.

“We’re fully staffed”… are you?

The environment has changed:

  • Demand is less predictable
  • Staffing is more complex
  • Pressure is higher than ever

And yet many organisations are still working the same way they always have. I’ve sat with leaders who say: “We’re fully staffed.” And yet:

  • Overtime is rising
  • Staff are exhausted
  • Budgets are under pressure

The inefficiencies you don’t see

I remember shifts where everything looked fine on paper. We had enough people. But in reality:

  • The skill mix was off
  • The timing didn’t align
  • Inefficiencies built up throughout the day

And everyone felt it by the end of the shift.

From instinct to insight

Here’s the shift: You don’t have a staffing problem. You have an optimisation opportunity. Optimisation isn’t about pushing people harder. It’s about working smarter:

  • Right staff
  • Right skills
  • Right time

The biggest transformation I see?

Moving from: “I know my department.” To: “I can see what’s happening — and act on it.” Because your system is already telling you the story. The question is: Are you listening?
